Here is the main character from P.N. Elrod's wonderful series of books, “The Vampire Files”. I have attempted to create Jack as he was at the beginning of the series, in the first book, “Bloodlist”. If you haven't read any of these books, I suggest you pick them up. They are VERY well done and I love the film noir, “gumshoe detective” feel that these books have. A GREAT read!

Image : Jack is a rather handsome man in his mid 20's. He is tall and of average build, with black hair that he slicks back. Jack tends to dress rather casually but is quite willing to dress himself up when appropriate (especially when going to see Bobbi). Wears dark clothing when out sneaking around, which tends to make him look like a thug.

Role-playing Hints : Jack is “basically a good guy”. He doesn't view himself as “dammed” or a monster but as a guy with a weird medical condition. He is somewhat afraid of his powers, especially his ability to control minds but he is slowly learning to trust and control them. Jack is devoted to his friends, Especially Charles Escott, whom he routinely trusts with his life and vice versa, and Bobbi Smythe, whom he loves dearly.

Haven : Jack has a room located at his friend and partner, Charles Escott's living quarters, behind Escott's office. The small room has just a hidden door for access and contains a cot with Jack's home earth sewn into oil cloth and covered with sheets, a table and chair, typewriter, lamp and radio.

Influence : Due to his connections with Gordy and Escott's own friends and acquaintances, Jack has some moderate influence in the gangs of Chicago -though he wouldn't bet his (un)life on it…

Merits/Flaws : Must Rest on Home Earth, Suffers aggravated damage from wooden objects, Mild Phobia (heights), Innate Magic Ability (Jack is able to manipulate his Protean 5-Mist form to a greater degree than most. He is able to partially solidify himself, allowing him to manipulate his environment but retain much of his invulnerability.), Innate Magic Ability (Should Jack become very emotionally upset when using his Dominate discipline, his victim must make a Willpower roll, difficulty of 3 plus the number of successes Jack scored on his Dominate attempt, or suffer from a severe derangement-including catatonia.

History:

Jack Fleming was born in 1900 in Cincinnati , Ohio , the youngest in a farming family of seven children. He joined the Army at 18 and went off to fight in WWI, an experience that he did not enjoy. Returning to America after the war, he became a journalist in New York City . While attending a showing of the movie Dracula, intending to write a light piece about it , Jack met and fell in love with a young woman named Maureen Dumont, who seemed knowledgeable but skeptical of the supernatural. Jack soon learned Maureen was a vampire, but this revelation did not diminish his love for her. The two grew close, eventually sharing blood in the hope that Jack would be able to spend eternity with Maureen. Their happiness was cut short when Maureen abruptly disappeared; leaving a note that she would join him when it was safe.

Five years of searching later, in the summer of 1936, Jack decided it was time to move on and begin a fresh start in Chicago . Soon after his arrival he awoke upon the shore of Lake Michigan with no memory of the previous few days. Jack works out that he had apparently been tortured, then murdered. Only Maureen's dark gift kept him from truly dying. With the help of Charles Escott, an English actor turned private eye or, as he prefers to designate himself, “private agent,” Jack takes on his first case: solving his own murder.
